Bishopthorpe, York | Planting Design The client came to me feeling overwhelmed by a garden that lacked structure and a conherent style. As a beginner gardener, she wanted a space that felt calm, manageable and beautiful and somewhere she could enjo
Bishopthorpe, York | Planting Design The client came to me feeling overwhelmed by a garden that lacked structure and a conherent style. As a beginner gardener, she wanted a space that felt calm, manageable and beautiful and somewhere she could enjoy while learning to care for it herself. Inspired by her love of her Acer palmatum and Sambucus nigra, I created a planting palette of rich plums and deep purples, softened with fresh greens, cool blues and vibrant pops of orange. The planting has been carefully chosen to provide interest throughout the seasons, while climbers will gradually cover the fencing and transform the garden into a sanctuary. To help the garden thrive long after planting day, I also created a bespoke seasonal aftercare guide, giving the client the confidence to nurture her new garden as it grows. It's always a privilege to create gardens that don't just look beautiful but also help people build a lasting connection with their outdoor space. A few concept design visuals from a recently approved project near Malton. Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the project responds to a new extension that impacts an existing retaining wall, creating an opportunity to rethink and enhance the surrounding garden spaces. Repositioning the retaining wall allows for a more seamless curve, improving both the flow and usability of the paved areas around the house. The design also incorporates additional parking in line with planning requirements. Careful consideration was given to ensuring these spaces remain subtle and sit comfortably within the existing architecture and character of the village.
